Public shouldn't pay for toxic clean-up

Premier Nathan Rees must ensure that the $98 million cost for the clean up of toxic material in Darling Harbour is paid by the companies responsible for the pollution, Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said today. (SMH, 24 July 2009, page 1)
“The public should not have to pay remediation costs to clean up carcinogenic pollution caused by irresponsible corporate activities,” Ms Rhiannon said.
“Alinta the company responsible for this pollution was bought out in 2007 by Singapore Power and Babcock & Brown for $13.9 billion.
“These companies should be made to remediate their own dirty work. The public should not have to pay.
“The future of Barangaroo is linked with the removal of the contaminated water in the Darling Harbour area.
“The companies that caused the pollution should not be allowed to slip away without paying the remediation costs because residential blocks are included in this development.
“Premier Rees and Planning Minister Kristina Keneally should not agree to the government picking up the clean up bill in order to fast track this development,” Ms Rhiannon said.
